Dairy Industry Wastewater Treatment

The treatment of food industry wastewater involves several similar technological steps, regardless of the specific sector in question: be it the dairy industry, or slaughterhouses and meat processing. If the treated wastewater is discharged into the public sewer, in most cases a chemical/physico-chemical, so-called coagulation-flocculation process is sufficient; if the treated wastewater is discharged directly into a natural watercourse, the chemical treatment must be followed by a biological treatment stage as well. Our company – and its legal predecessor – has built numerous dairy industry wastewater treatment plants, and we have significant experience in this field too.

The first step of the design work is to survey the wastewater-generating manufacturing technology. Extensive literature data are available on the specific values that can be expected for the manufacturing of individual product groups (e.g. fresh dairy products, cheeses) – this information is a good complement to the on-site sampling survey. At KÖRTE Kft., the treatment technology is always developed on the basis of laboratory tests, and occasionally pilot-plant scale trials.

Main steps of the general chemical treatment scheme

  1. screening, removal of solid pollutants
  2. collection, homogenisation
  3. pH adjustment by acid/alkali dosing
  4. coagulation by dosing iron- or aluminium-based chemicals
  5. flocculation by dosing polymer solution
  6. phase separation by sedimentation or flotation
  7. sludge dewatering with a plastic chamber filter press
  8. discharge of the treated water into the sewer via a metering shaft
