Air and Gas Cleaning Technologies
During the treatment of industrial wastewater and sludge, we have increasingly encountered the need to solve air pollution problems. Manufacturing processes may generate gases that are harmful to health and the environment (e.g. ammonia), whose release into the workplace air and/or the environment must be prevented. The most common gas cleaning technology used for this purpose is gas scrubbing: pollutants are removed from the contaminated gas by washing it with a scrubbing liquid.
The main components of a gas scrubbing technology
- scrubbing liquid storage tank
- scrubbing tower with observation openings and connecting pipes
- mist eliminator
- packing material to enhance the surface area
- water and/or air filter
- recirculation pump
- fan
- measuring instruments (pH, conductivity, etc.)
- control unit
The washing operation takes place in countercurrent within the scrubbing tower, where the gas enters from below and the scrubbing liquid from above. The tower may contain packing material that increases the mass-transfer surface between the gas and liquid phases. The scrubbing liquid can be water or a chemical solution (e.g. sulfuric acid in the case of ammonia contamination) that absorbs the pollutant. Over time the scrubbing liquid becomes saturated – this can be measured instrumentally – and must be replaced.
