Plastic Chamber Filter Press

Plastic Chamber Filter Press

In most wastewater treatment technologies a sludge-like material (a by-product or waste) is generated that must be dewatered before use and/or disposal. Among the sludge dewatering equipment available in the industry, the filter press achieves the highest dry-matter content. It is a simple, batch-operated, easy-to-handle machine with no rotating parts. Partly because of this, its operating cost is low compared with, for example, a centrifuge running at high speed – up to 3,000–4,000 rpm.

Images and technical drawings

In plastic chamber filter presses the actual filtration is performed by a filter cloth attached to plastic plates – chambers. The size and number of chambers determine the filtration area, i.e. the capacity. A high-pressure pump (10–16 bar) presses the pre-conditioned, dilute sludge slurry through the closed chambers mounted on the frame. Its solid parts do not pass through the filter cloth, while the sludge water diffuses through it and leaves the machine through the filtrate drainage channels.

As the chambers fill, the pressure in the system gradually increases; the control automation senses this and, when the preset pressure value is reached, stops the sludge feeding. Regulation can also be combined with measuring the time between two filling cycles. At that point the press can be opened and the sludge (around 20–28%, depending on its nature and composition) can be removed from the chambers.
