Our client is a player in railway freight transport. At the site concerned, wagons carrying bulk products are washed inside and out.
This posed a challenge because the wash water contains a very diverse range of contaminants: dissolved salts just as much as the seeds of various crops and their coarse, solid fragments. The main difficulty was removing the dissolved salts, which cover a wide physical-chemical spectrum.
Steps of the technology
- mechanical screening to remove the solid contaminants;
- chemical treatment (coagulation-flocculation) to remove the colloidal fraction;
- separation of the sludge and water phases by sedimentation;
- monitoring the dissolved salt content by conductivity measurement and, where necessary, removing the dissolved salts with reverse osmosis (RO) equipment.
Our commission covered the complete realisation: every phase of the work from permitting (water-rights construction and operating permits) through design to construction and commissioning.
